Perio-Osteo Workshop on community level in Darbhanga

Darbhanga:Perio- Osteo Workshop which explore the link between periodontal disease and osteoporosis and drawed up a series of recommendation took place in Darbhanaga rural area on community level on 3rd January 2020. This workshop was organized jointly by  Dr Hasib Kamali MBBS DNB Aligarh Muslim University . orthopedics and neurospine (Dr Kamali Ortho & spine center) and Dr Raafey Hasan BDS Jamia Millia Islamia FFA From AIIMS New Delhi ( Dantaah Dental Clinic And Research Center).

Participant in the Perio-Osteo Workshop focused their effort on two areas:-

1. The epidemiological evidence of the link between periodontal disease and osteoporosis.

2. Discussion on positive asscociation between osteoporosis and periodontal disease.

Calcium and vitamin D deficiency are major risk factors for osteoporosis and more recent evidence suggests a similar role for periodontal disease. Osteoporotic elderly women who were not treated for the condition have a higher risk for severe periodontal disease. Women with osteoporosis are three times more likely to experience tooth loss than those who do not have the disease.

Both osteoporosis and periodontal diseases are bone resorptive diseases. Osteoporosis is characterized by reductions in bone mass and may lead to skeletal fragility and fracture. Periodontitis is characterized by resorption of the alveolar bone and is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because loss of alveolar bone is a prominent feature of periodontal disease, severe osteoporosis could be suspected of being an aggravating factor in the case of periodontal destruction. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that the breakdown of periodontal tissue may, in part, be related to systemic diseases, including osteoporosis.

During Workshop It has been discussed that no positive association was found between osteoporosis and periodontal disease. Truly  osteoporosis may not be a definitive risk factor in the understanding of periodontal disease. Since periodontal diseases are multi-factorial and the main factor is microbial plaque. In fact, osteoporosis cannot be the cause of the onset of periodontal disease, but after outbreak of the disease, it may be a predisposing factor in the exacerbation, or persistence of the disease.

Observation in small population and random studies indicate a greater propensity to lose alveolar bone in subjects with osteoporosis, especially in subjects with preexisting periodontitis. This indicate that osteoporosis or low systemic BMD should be considered a risk factor for periodontal disease progression. With the limitation of this review, it is clear that longer studies with more patients are needed on this issue. A hypothesis that relates systemic osteoporosis to local osteoporotic changes in the jaws and loss of tooth-supporting alveolar bone is supported by the observations from various studies. Osteoporosis has been proposed as a risk factor for periodontal disease.

Health care professionals and patients alike must be made aware that prevention of osteoporosis may be beneficial not only for maintaining bone health alone, but also for periodontal health. Accordingly, it highlights the role of multidisciplinary teams in supporting health. Dentists should refer patients to a doctor to enforce the treatment of osteoporosis. Likewise, doctors should feel comfortable to refer patients to a dentist for prevention and evaluation of periodontal condition. By doing so, the risk for developing osteoporosis and severe periodontal disease could be minimized.

During Perio-Osteo workshop, health educational compaign offer clear massages on periodontal and osteoporosis disease for the dentists, doctor, patients to take steps for prevention and treatment of periodontal disease and osteoporosis. This initiative was taken by leading expert of dentistry and orthopedics and neurospine surgeon.
